Free Response Essay #1

DIRECTIONS:

• Teams 1, 4, and 7 will work on question 1; teams 2 and 5 will work on question 2; and teams 3, 6, and 8 will work on question 3 listed below.  This will be a 40 point assignment.
  
  
• Each team will create 1 new page and entitle it, for example: [NOP3CommonPage -- for team 3 of AHAP NOP class].  This is where the team will collaborate and do the following tasks:
  • First, each team must select a leader for this assignment.  His/her job is to make sure that all team members stay on task, contribute constructively, and see to it that all new pages/assignments are posted on time!
  • Each team will start by creating a brainstorming list of facts [legislation, Supreme Court cases, key terms, philosophical ideas, major political, economic, social, and intellectual movements of the period covered in your question, etc.] on the team "common" page. This page will function as a common scrap page for ideas, first drafts of an essay, etc. 
    • DUE DATE:  Mon. 2/11/08 by 10 pm [5 points]
      
      
  • When each team member adds information on that common scrap page, they must do so by showing their contribution in a particular color for the text.  In this way their work can be identified [decide amongst the team members, what color will be associated with each particular team member and type the color name in parentheses after your name on the main team page].  Use easy distinguishable colors like red, blue, green, brown--don't go with orange, yellow, or hot pink!
    
    
  • The team will collaborate to create the best introductory and concluding paragraphs they can write [also on the common scrap page].
    • DUE DATE:  Wed. 2/13/08 by 10 pm [5 points]
      
      
  • Finally, each team member will write one main "meat" paragraph on a particular sub-topic agreed upon by all team members on the common scrap page.
    • DUE DATE:  Fri. 2/15/08 by 10 pm [10 points]
      
      
  • When completed, the other team members MUST peer review the entire essay [remember, use your own distinct COLOR to make additions, corrections, etc., where necessary].  The team leader should email me if there are any problems with other team members.  He/she will then create a new wiki page entitled NOP3Fre1 and paste a final clean copy of the group essay there.  Create a link to this new page from the main team page.  I will read the final good copy of each team's essays and make my own comments and assessment.

question #2: Were the industrialists of the late 19th Century “Robber Barons” or “Captains 
                   of Industry?” Were the results of their efforts, examples of exploitation and 
                   graft, or were they philanthropic and cultural giants who helped to build the 
                  American culture?

question #3: Identify and analyze the factors that changed the American city in the second 
                   half of the 19c.
